Assessment arrangements
What are Assessment Arrangements?
If students will be disadvantaged by a disability or ongoing illness in their assessment tasks the university can make arrangements which will minimize or eliminate the impact of the disability. Students still need to demonstrate they can meet the learning objectives of their subjects. The arrangements will involve modifications to assessment tasks, but maintain academic standards.
Students need to make an appointment to see their Academic Liaison Officer. Documentation of the disability or ongoing illness will be required. Students are encouraged to consult the Special Needs Service for assistance before seeing their ALO.
Documentation Requirements
Students need to provide a statement from a health professional about their disability or illness. Ideally the statement should outline the impact of the disability in learning and assessment and provide recommendations for assessment arrangements. See Special Needs for advice about documentation.
Faculty Based Assessments
Each semester students may have a variety of different assessment tasks. Examples are: essays, reports, projects, participation in online discussions, group assignments and presentations, quizzes and exams. Exams in Faculties are called “informals”. Assessment tasks may be made more equitable for students who will be disadvantaged by the impact of a disability.
If you need modifications to any Faculty-based assessment you need to see your Academic Liaison Officer at the beginning of each semester so the arrangements can be made. For exams during semester you need to check with your lecturer two weeks before the exam that the arrangements will be in place.
Formal Examinations
“Formal” examinations are those conducted by the Student Administration Unit at the end of semester. If you have a permanent disability and your ALO approves arrangements for your formal exams you will not need to reapply unless you want to have different arrangements made, or you change to a course in another Faculty.
