Your Privacy

What do we mean when we say we provide a confidential service to our student clients? It means that what you tell us and any documents you provide to us will not be passed on to anyone outside Special Needs without your permission. Within the Special Needs team we may share information and ideas on how we can best assist individual students. We are required to keep a record of basic client information and to keep our records in a locked filing system. Our records are kept separately from the university's official student records.

When we have your permission to discuss or write about your situation with other university staff, we pass on only the information these staff members need to make appropriate decisions. Documents on our computers are password protected. Care is taken to protect information about clients from being seen by other Student Services staff on printers or copiers.

The only exceptions we make to our policy of not passing on information about clients are when we are concerned that a client may harm themselves or someone else, or if information on our files is subpoenaed by a court. If we are concerned about a student's safety we seek guidance from the Director of Student Services. In extreme circumstances we may be required to release information to protect those at risk.
