Tax returns

You may need to complete an income tax return each year. To find out more about what required refer to the the Australian Tax Office website http://www.ato.gov.au (opens an external page).

You may be able to reclaim specific education expenses. The Australian Tax Office provided an online resource claiming self education expenses - specific expenses (opens an external page).

Need help with your tax return?

If you are on a low income, the Australian Tax Office through it's Tax Help program (opens an external site) have trained volunteers who are able to provide free help filling out your tax return.

Tax Help is only available July to October each year.

Once you have determined that you are eligible for the Tax Help program and want to make an appointment please phone 13 28 61.

You qualify for this free service, ONLY if you meet the following criteria:

General Criteria

Eligible

• Income taxes should be less than $35,000
• Any dependant children under 16 or full time students under 25, are eligible
• If income is over $35K, not eligible
• The $35K increases, with 1 independent it is $37,500
• For each dependent it goes up $2,500

Not Eligible

• Employed as a contractor, including taxi driver
• In a business, including sole trader
• Received a summary payment for labour hire
• Sold shares
• Sold investment property
• Owns rental property
• Received royalties
• Received distributions from a trust
• Received foreign income, other than foreign pension annuity
