Host organisations

The role of the host employer is to assist the student to learn from their experience in a supportive atmosphere. To assist the student fulfil their workplace obligations the host employer  will nominate a supervisor to provide:

  • Assistance with and approval of a project task description suitable for use in identifying potential students. The Careers Service can assist with writing a job description. It is important that task descriptions reflect meaningful work developing knowledge and skills. Although students may need to perform routine or busy work as part of their normal duties, these should not be the primary focus
  • Assistance and participation in the recruitment and selection of the student
  • Supervision and guidance for the student, including providing the student with a general orientation of your organisation, rules and objectives of the placement
  • Periodic reviews and progress meetings as considered appropriate
  • Opportunities to interact with other staff
  • Access to the experiences, equipment and information necessary for the students to complete their duties
  • Ongoing encouragement and support as well as suggestions for improvement of performance and
  • An opportunity for reflective discussion with the student about the placement, the profession or your organisation

Costs

Working Solutions is offered at no cost to the host employer.

Students will be required to meet the cost of their transport to and from the host organisation and other miscellaneous cost such as lunches. In some instances the host may wish to provide the student assistance with travel and food. This however, is not a Working Solutions requirement and should not be expected by students.

All work related expenses would need to be met by the host employer.

Visa's

Students will need to have/obtain permission to work rights on their student visa. Students may be asked to provide evidence of their permission to work prior to the commencement of any placement.

Insurance

Students who participate in Working Solutions are insured for public liability through UTS. In addition, UTS provides students with personal injury cover, in case of injury during placement. This insurance is provided at no cost to the host organisation.

Employers participating in Working Solutions also need public liability insurance before hosting a student.

Employer registration

A host organisation can register their intent to participate in Working Solutions at any time, simply complete the online employer registration form.

Working solutions agreement

Prior to the commencement of any placement UTS, the host employer and the student will need to sign a working solutions agreement.
