Writing a job advertisment
Job descriptions can be very complicated or very simple. Here are our suggestions for writing a straightforward and concise advertisement.
1. Provide contact details
All advertisements should include the following information:
- Company details
- name
- address
- website, and
- ABN
- Contact details
- name
- email address
- phone, and
- fax numbers
2. Describe the job – shorter is better
There is limited room on the notice boards for jobs, so please limit your description to approximately 300 words. Please note that your job description may be paraphrased when it is entered into our jobs database.
3. Indicate the job type - full time, part time, casual etc
Please specify whether the position is part time, casual, full time, vacation work, internship, work experience, graduate recruitment or a fixed contract.
Wherever possible, include information on the specific hours that the successful applicant would be required to work.
For contract work please indicate the length of the contract as this will affect how you are charged. See the administration fee schedule for more information.
4. List the qualifications or experience you require
Please state any formal qualifications, area of knowledge or specific skills you require of applicants. Also indicate any relevant experience that is required.
5. Indicate to students how they should apply
Clearly indicate how students are expected to apply, for example online, by mail or via e-mail. You should also indicate who they should address their applications to. Ensure you indicate what you would like included in each application, for example, resume, cover letter, selection criteria etc.
6. Closing date
Specifying a closing date for applications is optional. If no closing date is provided, we advertise the position for one month or until the Careers service is notified that the position has been filled.
For information about important dates like exams and holidays, check out the UTS principal dates in the UTS Handbook.
7. Salary information
Including information on salary rate or range is optional. If you would like information on award wages, check out the NSW Industrial Relations (open an external page) or Federal WageNet (open an external page). Alternatively, professional associations or industry bodies may provide information on market salary rates.
8. Inform UTS Careers service when the position is filled!
Please contact the Careers service when you fill the position.
We will remove your advertising which will minimise the number of unnecessary applications you may receive.
